THROWBACK THURSDAY

This is a baby picture of Nugget that I Picnik'd.  He was probably about 2 months old here...  Where does the time go?

GRRCC Golfing for Goldens

We enjoyed a lovely Saturday at Stonebridge Golf Course in Waxhaw, NC for the Annual GRRCC Golfing for Goldens charity golf tournament.  B played, but Nugget and I opted to ride around and observe instead.

That means this will likely be the scene at my house this evening and well into tomorrow morning. Oh happy day! And in case you're wondering, yes that IS my bed he's on... Like he owns it.

And you thought dinosaurs were extinct...

After narrowly escaping the live Jurassic Park scene which unfolded in the backseat of the Impala on the way to Kentucky this weekend, it became painfully clear we could not continue traveling with Oscar in the car as carelessly as we had been.

A few weeks ago, I invested in two of the travel harnesses that attach to seatbelts.  These work extremely well... so long as the sun is shining, the planets are aligned, the moon isn't full and pigs are flying.  (Ok, I actually very highly recommend these harnesses as they do keep your dogs secure in the unlikely event of a car accident, but that doesn't make this story fun.   Further, they do not prevent an overgrown crybaby from bouncing around like a bouncy ball on an elastic string in the backseat whilst squealing and barking like a raging lunatic).

Last week, in anticipation of our 8 hour trek to Kentucky, I bought a $30 nylon travel crate from Target hoping that would finally be the answer keep the doodle contained safely.  The crate worked for about $30 worth of time, i.e. long enough to get us about an hour west on I-40... which would have been great, but we had about 7 hours left to go.  Initially he didn't mind being in the crate though the melatonin may have had something to do with that.   But damn if it wasn't raining in Tennessee and Kentucky, (not unlike it has been for approximately the last 40 days and 40 nights).  I knew we should have opted for a boat instead... but I digress.  Anyway, it was far too dangerous to drive without wipers, but beyond just flipping out about those, Oscar was about to cause himself and me an aneurysm at the sound of raindrops bouncing off the windshield.  We tried drowning out the sound (no pun intended) by turning up the radio.  We covered all possible ways for him to see out of the crate with anything we could find - mainly B's clothes... like literally the shirt off his back.  I begged, pleaded and threatened his life to no avail.  The high-pitched whining and barking continued.

On about mile 350 of the trip, Oscar mutated into some creature that very closely resembled a tyrannosaurus and ripped open the mesh side of the crate at the seam, launching his newly developed reptile-like body and very large teeth into the front seat.  And surely not by accident, his grossly long talons ripped open the flesh on my neck... a mere 24 hours before I was to be in a wedding.  It was about this time I also realized he had both puked and peed in the nylon crate.

Fortunately, B managed to quickly rig something up in order to contain the beast in the backseat while we miserably finished the remaining 150 miles of our trip.  And by "rigged something up," I do mean that he essentially collapsed the nylon crate on top of the dog until we reached our destination.  Oops.

By the time we reached my parents' house, T-Rex had mutated back into a cute and snuggly little 'doodle.  But I was not pleased.

As luck would have it, the rain was still falling by the time we were set to head back to NC on Sunday.  Sans nylon crate, we belted Oscar into the backseat and locked the seatbelt.  This worked extremely well... for 20 seconds.  Again, the tyrannosaurus mutation occurred and he was all like "EFF YOU IF YOU THINK I'M GONNA SIT BACK IN THIS SEAT AND LET THOSE BASTARD RAINDROPS VANDALIZE THIS CAR!"  Before we even left the city limits, we were in a Petsmart purchasing a hard, plastic crate with chains and padlocks and horse tranquilizers.  Oscar willingly got into the crate in the backseat and we didn't hear another peep from him until he had to poop somewhere near Asheville, NC.  (He was calm and kind enough to let us know before he actually defecated in the crate this time.)

Anyway, I just want it on the record that this was my idea all along - the hard plastic crate thing - but B was all like, "No, I got this.  He'll be FINE!" because God forbid we spend the $70 for the good crate upfront...  Yeah, well the interior of the Impala may never recover, nor will my blood pressure.  Lesson learned puppy daddies - PUPPY MOMS ALWAYS KNOW BEST!

GRRCC Dunk Your Dog Day Photo Dump and Commentary

We looked forward to the GRRCC Annual Dunk Your Dog Day out at Wickersham's K-9 Ranch in Marshville, NC for at least a month.  Nugget absolutely loves to swim and I was anxious to see Oscar in action since our friend Dina at Pet Paradise Resort (Charlotte) helped him overcome is slight fear of water by getting in the doggy pool with him.  (Seriously, how sweet is that?!)  The weather was pacing toward perfection and the boys spent Friday night resting up for their big Saturday afternoon pool party.
The day started out great.  As predicted, the weather was gorgeous and we enjoyed our 30 mile ride out to the countryside.  Though we'd never been out to the ranch before, Nugget knew exactly what we were there for!  As soon as the harnesses came off, he was in the water ... and I didn't see him out of it again for 2 hours.  B took off Oscar's harness... and he took a running leap and splashed right into the water!  Where did that come from?!  Oscar's newfound confidence was extremely impressive and made me so proud!  As soon as we set our chairs down, I put his life jacket back in our bag.  My little man is all grown up!

Though most of the day was huge fun, it did not come without ordeal.  First, we brought along Oscar's beloved red frisbee because that had previously been the only way to get him in the water.  So B chucked the frisbee way out into the middle of the lake and as the doodle began to paddle quickly toward it, the frisbee disappeared under the surface, never to be seen again.  Oscar was devastated but seriously WHY THE HELL WOULDN'T A FRISBEE FLOAT?!  We were eventually able to entice him to enjoy other toys which did actually float.
Toward the end of our afternoon, the boys were both getting a little tired and cranky.  Oscar staked claim to a blue ball he found and growled at anyone who came within 20 feet.  That was our sign that it was time to go.
We trekked back to the car and began packing everything back inside, during the process of which I discovered a handful of dehydrated baby carrots Nugget had obviously snubbed on a previous car ride and had since been baking in the hot Carolina sun.  Tell me again how dogs are unlike kids?
The icing on the cake was about mile 15 of the trip back.  Both Nugget and Oscar had fallen fast asleep as soon as the car pulled out of the ranch driveway and we expected they would remain as such until we got home... except they didn't.  Well, Oscar didn't.  B and I were discussing plans for the remainder of the weekend when we were startled by something that sounded an awful lot like someone PEEING IN THE BACKSEAT!  Yes, Oscar peed a big enough puddle to fill all bodies of the Great Lakes - TWICE - in the backseat of B's company car!  Thank God for waterproof seat covers...
Once home, the beasts each got a bath and we all settled in for a much-needed nap...  These kids wear me out!

More on this later:

A Mother's Day Surprise

When Nugget asked to borrow the car this morning, I reluctantly obliged.  He never asks unless it's a true emergency because he knows I don't like him out there on the road alone.  He told me that he and Oscar had an important errand to run, but couldn't elaborate beyond that.  I received my Mother's Day gift (2 Pandora charms for my bracelet) earlier this week, so I figured they were not going shopping.  Boy was I surprised when they came home sporting these:

"I LOVE MOM" TATTOOS!

To all our mom friends -
whether you have human babies, furry/feathery/scaley babies (or all of the above!)
We wish you a
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY
full of love and surprises!

XOXO
